MUSD Survey Letter from Superintendent

Letterhead

September 27, 2018

To MUSD Parents/Guardians:

Over the past several years, the Marana district has worked diligently to strengthen our curriculum and instructional model to meet the needs of our 21st century learners. To continue to meet these needs, MUSD is excited to further enhance our curricular both within and between grade levels. This vertical alignment will allow us to embed particular 21st century skill development at each grade level, ensuring each student the opportunity to achieve curriculum standards and greater success in college, career, and life.

As part of this process, we want to hear from you. I am inviting you to participate in our Portrait of a MUSD Graduate survey to be launched on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. On that day, you will receive an email invitation to participate in a short survey regarding what you consider to be the most valuable overarching goals for student success.

This information will guide MUSD in goal development to ensure when every student graduates and leaves our District they will be prepared with the skills, knowledge, and values necessary for success in an ever-changing society.

Everyone in our community has a voice and we hope you will participate in this exciting process.

Thank you in advance for your time; your contribution and participation is greatly valued.

Pursuing Excellence,

Doug Wilson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View family,

We are heading into the eighth week of the quarter. Next week our students will be taking their mid-term assessments.

In reflecting on that thought, I recalled the Navy Seal quote, "In times of adversity you don't rise to the occasion, you fall to the level of your training." I think about that in the sense that we hope our teachers have done a great job preparing our students for these assessments and the training they have had will be reflected in their performance next week.

I also have spoken often about grit. I read an article that shared the key ingredients for developing grit, and they are:

  • Passion
  • Focus
  • Discipline
  • Determination
  • Resilience
  • Dealing with Failure and Rejection

A good way to think of this for our students might be this quote from Robert Strauss, "Success is a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired." We want our students to keep pushing and overcome the challenges presented and achieve their goals.

Have a great week and thank you for your support our your children and our school.

Special Presentation – Teaching Fellows

Looking for a New Purpose? Career? Recently Retired? Marana Unified School District is looking for energetic people interested in becoming a teacher in our District. If you have a student-centered philosophy and want to inspire, motivate, and make a difference in students' lives, then this is the career for you!

Marana and the University of Arizona have partnered to create a unique opportunity, through the Teaching Fellows Program, to support you in reaching this goal!

Representatives from the University of Arizona and Marana Unified School District will discuss incentives for becoming a Marana Teaching Fellow on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 5:30pm at Coyote Trail Elementary (Library), 8000 N Silverbell Tucson, AZ 85743.

RSVP to reserve your spot today at (520) 682-4745 (Pizza will be provided) or visit https://www.maranausd.org/teachingfellows to learn more about the program.

From the MVHS Front Office,

All students should have their student ID with them at all times. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students - please enter campus through the Main Gate at the service drive.  Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

Chromebook Insurance

There is still time to purchase Chromebook Insurance. If interested, please contact Mrs. Ketchum in the Bookstore to purchase insurance. The cost is $30.00. Chromebook Insurance covers accidental damage to the device for the initial occurrence.  Insurance does not, however, cover the replacement of a device charger.  Insurance is not required, but it can provide peace of mind.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444. If a "request to excuse" message is not received, the attendance clerks will attempt to contact the parent/guardian so they may properly record the student's absence(s). If no response is received from the parent/guardian the absence(s) will be recorded as unexcused.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

Bio/Bio-Med Intro 1 S1: End Quarter 1 update

Dear Parents- We are 2 weeks from the end of first quarter. We will be completing a final unit on organic molecules ( proteins, carbohydrates, fats) and their role in living things. Please check your student's grade book to see how they are doing. Excessive absences account for many low grades and keeps students constantly working from behind to catch up. My room is open for study and work every day at lunch. We have a unit test on Periodic table and basic chemistry concepts on Friday 9/21. Your student has 2 practice quizzes, videos and the power points for all notes in their classroom stream to help them prepare.  Please encourage them to seek help and do these practice items as well as review the note taker, bell works and labs. Thank you.

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View family,

We want to start with a recognition this week that makes all of us very proud. Ms. Jill Hurt was recognized on Saturday night at the University of Arizona football game as one of nine finalists for the Circle K/U of A Teacher of the Year Award. Ms. Hurt is a tremendous teacher that gives so much of herself every single day and we wish her the very best as she moves forward in the teacher of the year program.

This is Homecoming week. On Friday, the football team will face Cienega. We also welcome our newest member to the Mountain View Hall of Fame. Dr. Thomas Desmaris will be inducted into this prestigious club and we are very proud of him and his accomplishments. He truly embodies what it means to be a Lion!

We also have the many other Homecoming activities this week, including the Pep Assembly on Friday and Dance after the game.

As we move into the seventh week of school it is important that our students stay on top of their assignments and work hard as we head toward the end of this quarter. Please remember to look at ParentVue for more information regarding your child's grade. This is the time of year that our teachers focus heavily on one of our Continuous Improvement Goals – Demonstration of Learning – and this may take many different iterations. When we discuss student engagement and demonstration of learning we want our teachers to be informed on what their students know. We may have been accustomed to paper and pencil tests. However, there has been a shift in thinking and we understand that students can demonstrate their knowledge in many ways. Our goals is that all students learn each day and can demonstrate that learning on an assessment.

Have a great week and Happy Homecoming.
