Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View family,

We have begun our fourth week of school. Although it feels like summer vacation just ended we are approaching middle of the quarter. This week our teachers will share with their students the routines and practices in using Synergy to manage their grades. The grade check will be done in every class rather than in their Summit class. We felt that this was better as the teacher will know what each individual student needs for their class.

As we continue to reflect upon our goals at Mountain View for this school year, one of the primary goals is student engagement. This will take many forms in our classrooms but the measure for this is are our students encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning through effective instruction. As Margaret Mead stated, "Children must be taught how to think, not what to think." If we are doing our jobs as educators than we are allowing for discourse, collaboration and encouraging our students to raise their level of engagement.

We find that we also discuss grit with our students quite often. I shared the following video with our staff in July and have spoken to our students about this as well. Grit is the strength demonstrated in one's character, resolve, courage. This is the time and place for our students to be challenged and to face adversity and find a way to overcome the obstacles placed before them. Watch video now

Have a great week and a wonderful Labor Day holiday.

Things to Know

From the MVHS Front Office,

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students - please enter campus through the Main Gate at the service drive.  Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

Chromebook Insurance

There is still time to purchase Chromebook Insurance. If interested, please contact Mrs. Ketchum in the Bookstore to purchase insurance. The cost is $30.00. Chromebook Insurance covers accidental damage to the device for the initial occurrence.  Insurance does not, however, cover the replacement of a device charger.  Insurance is not required, but it can provide peace of mind.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444. If a "request to excuse" message is not received, the attendance clerks will attempt to contact the parent/guardian so they may properly record the student's absence(s). If no response is received from the parent/guardian the absence(s) will be recorded as unexcused.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

Storm Follow-up

sign

Good afternoon Mountain View family,

We wanted to thank you for your patience and support during our storm on Wednesday afternoon.

As we approached the final few minutes of the school day the storm moved right over our campus.

As a school we use WeatherBug as an app to monitor lightning strikes and had multiple strikes within .1 miles of Mountain View.

One of our monitors showed two lightning strikes on our campus.

Therefore, we felt we needed to go into a Shelter in Place. Our students and our staff did an amazing job and followed the necessary and appropriate procedures.

Once the storm had moved far enough from campus to safely allow students to leave campus we ended our Shelter in Place.

Unfortunately, with the amount of rain that fell, we had massive flooding on and around campus. That limited or blocked most of the traffic flow around campus and our buses were very late in departing and returning our students to their homes.

This was an unprecedented event and one that we felt needed to happen to protect our students. Again, thank you for your patience and understanding and the support of this process.

We are still cleaning up around campus but our teachers are fabulous and learning continued throughout the day.

We would like to especially thank Vince Bianchi at Bianchi's North on Tangerine for graciously providing lunch for the staff displaced by the storm.

Have a great rest of your week.

Todd

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

Thank you to everyone that attended our Open House last week. We were very appreciative that you were able to attend and learn from our teachers on what to look forward to this year.

For those able to see the new College, Career and Life Skills Center we hope you enjoyed the new building and are making plans to come visit our College and Career Center.

We have been very busy the last few weeks and feel like we can now settle in and get down to school. Gandhi once said, "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." We hope we are able to inspire your children to become life-long learners. Through collaboration and innovation, relationships, rigor and relevance, our goal is to ensure learning happens every single day at Mountain View. That said, we ask that you hold us to that. Please reach out to me, my administrative team and our staff if you feel like we are not hitting the mark please let us know so we can address it immediately. Another quote, listed as Anonymous, states, "If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." We want all of our students determined to learn.

This week we begin the regular season for fall sports. Please come and support our programs and celebrate with our students. These are indeed special days and they go by so quickly. Also, mark your calendar for Homecoming on September 21st. Your Mountain Lions will host Cienega at Wayne Jones Field at 7 p.m. with the Homecoming festivities beginning earlier that afternoon.

As always thank you for supporting Mountain View High School and have a great week.
