April 20, 2018 To MUSD Parents/Guardians: As you are aware, over the last several days, educators and staff across the state were voting on whether or not to participate in a walkout. Last night, the Arizona Educators United movement and the Arizona Education Association announced that educators and staff across our state voted to enact a walkout beginning Thursday, April 26. No information was given on length of that walk out. The two groups stated that 57,000 ballots were returned of which 78% voted for the walkout. At this time, it is unconfirmed how this will affect schools in our District. We recognize that this raises many questions and issues for you. Please know that District Administration and school leadership are meeting with teacher representatives for Arizona Educators United and working hard to develop specifics for how to best handle the situation for students, parents and staff members. I want to assure you that all schools will continue to be open and follow their regular school schedule Monday, April 23; Tuesday, April 24; and Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Marana Unified School District is making every effort to avoid closing district schools on Thursday, April 26. However, if we have too few staff members to appropriately supervise students and ensure their safety and well-being, we will be forced to close schools. As soon as we have additional information we will communicate with you. We ask that you consider an alternative plan for your student(s) in the event that our schools close. We also ask that you please make sure that your phone numbers and email addresses are up to date at your child's school. Attached to this letter, you will find additional information in the form of FAQs. This information is also posted on the District Website at www.maranausd.org. These FAQs will continue to be updated and we will continue to keep you informed. It is our hope that this situation will be resolved at the state level so that teaching and learning continues through the remainder of the school year as planned. I appreciate your understanding and patience as we gather critical information and solidify our plans. Sincerely, Doug Wilson, Ed.D. Superintendent Attached: FAQs and Copy of Letter |
