Marana schools to remain closed Tuesday May 1

Letterhead

April 30, 2018

To MUSD Parents/Guardians:

As you are aware, the Arizona Educators United #RedforEd movement and Arizona Education Association involving educators and staff across the state have actively engaged in walkouts to bring attention to the issue of low public education funding in Arizona. Marana Unified School District school-based educators and staff have joined this movement in solidarity to demand clear, sustainable solutions to Arizona's educational funding crisis and to express themselves about the impact of the school funding issues in Arizona.

On Friday, April 27, the Arizona Legislature adjourned without reaching an agreement on the Governor's recent budget proposal. The Governor's education budget proposal must be considered as a part of the entire Arizona budget, which must be acted upon by our elected leaders in the House and Senate. If the budget is affirmed, the Governor then needs to sign it into action. To that end, educators across the state continue their walkout and efforts to have their voices heard at the state level.

As previously stated, our District is committed to re-opening schools as soon as possible. We also recognize that we cannot hold classes, expect meaningful learning to take place, and provide a safe environment without a sufficient number of teachers.

At this time, the Marana school district does not have sufficient staff to provide instruction, appropriately supervise students, and ensure student safety. As a result, all 18 Marana schools will be CLOSED Tuesday, May 1 and REMAIN CLOSED until we have sufficient staff to reopen. It is our hope that a budget agreement will be reached soon.

We know that this is an unprecedented time in our state. We also recognize that this situation creates additional stress and uncertainty for our students and families. I want to reassure you that we are continuing to monitor this situation closely and are working hard and exploring all options to minimize impact on our students and families including but not limited to the following:
• Ability to minimize impact of school closure without challenging families by adding days to the school calendar.
• Elimination of any potential impact on our graduating seniors.
• Development of plans to address many other items successfully including Advanced Placement tests, senior finals, online course work, and alternative credit options.
• Communications with the Department of Education regarding the school calendar.

The District will continue to provide updates to parents through email, phone call, and text as applicable. Updates will also continue to be provided on our Website at www.maranausd.org and on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/maranaschools/. If you have not recently done so, please take a few minutes to review the FAQs. We encourage parents to read the FAQs for valuable information regarding breakfast and lunch meals, activities, athletics and field trips, graduation, educational meetings and more.

We are focused on reopening schools as soon as soon as possible and are committed to providing our students with a successful and rewarding finish to the school year. We would love for this to happen sooner rather than later. With only 18 school days remaining in our current school calendar, we have a lot to get done!

Thank you again for your patience, flexibility, and support during these unprecedented times. We will continue to keep you posted.

Sincerely,

Doug Wilson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Marana Schools Closed Monday, April 30

Marana Schools to Remain Closed Monday, April 30

All 18 Marana schools will be CLOSED on Monday, April 30, based on the number of school based educators and staff participating in the statewide walkout. While the last thing we want to do is close our schools, we cannot appropriately supervise students and ensure student safety. This impacts preschool through high school.

The Marana Unified School District is committed to re-opening schools as soon as possible. At this time, it is unknown how long schools will be closed.

It is our hope that schools will reopen on Tuesday. In the event that schools will be closed, we will inform parents no later than 3:00pm Monday, April 30. We ask that you continue to consider an alternative plan for your child(ren) in the event that our schools are forced to close beyond Monday, April 30.

During school closure, breakfast and lunch meals will be served at select school locations. Lunch will also be served through the District's Marana Cares Mobile service. This FREE service is available to all children (regardless of their home school), 18 years old and younger.

The District will continue to provide updates to parents through email, phone call, and text as applicable. Updates will also continue to be provided on our Website at www.maranausd.org and on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/maranaschools/.

Answers to questions can be found in our FAQs. We encourage parents to read the FAQs for valuable information regarding breakfast and lunch meals, activities, athletics and field trips, graduation, educational meetings and more.

Physical Education: Good Morning, Falcon Parents...

A couple of quick updates since school is still closed through Monday...
Swimming: If school has not resumed by Wednesday, we will be sending out detailed information relevant to students who plan to participate in swimming.  Swimming begins May 7th.
Extra Credit: This is posted in your student's google classroom and will be available until school resumes.  At that time it will be removed.  The EC assignment takes maybe ten minutes or so to complete but provides a valuable opportunity for students to consider who they want to be, what they want to accomplish in their lives, and what changes might be necessary to achieve their goals.
Student Questions:  For a prompt reply to questions or concerns, students can continue to email Mrs. Corner.
Thank you for your continued support,
Amy Corner & Patrick Miller

[Important Notice] Data processing terms for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) available for review / acceptance

Dear Customer,
Over the past year we've shared how we are preparing to meet the requirements of the GDPR, the new data protection law coming into force on May 25, 2018. It affects European and non-European businesses using online advertising and measurement solutions when their sites and apps are accessed by users in the European Economic Area (EEA).
We would like to ensure you are aware of updated data processing terms and a new contact collection mechanism for your Google Analytics Suite Products (Standard and 360 versions). If you service users in the EEA (or are based in Switzerland, where our updated terms are also relevant), or are otherwise subject to the GDPR, please review and accept these terms and provide related contact information. If you do not service users in the EEA or are not based in Switzerland, you may disregard the rest of this email.
Step 1: Review and accept the updated data processing terms in each account for each product you manage in the Google Analytics Suite:
  • Google Analytics / Analytics 360: Admin > Account > Account Settings (scroll to bottom of page)
  • Google Optimize / Optimize 360: Edit Account Details > (scroll to bottom of page)
  • Google Tag Manager / Tag Manager 360: Account Settings > (scroll to bottom of page)
  • Google Attribution / Attribution 360: Admin > Account Settings > (scroll to bottom of page)
  • Google Data Studio: User Settings > Account and Privacy (acceptance managed on a user basis)
Additional information about accepting these terms:
  • All clients using 360 products, clients using Data Studio, and clients using standard versions of Tag Manager or Optimize whose accounts were created before March 12, 2018, can review and accept data processing terms in their account(s).
  • For clients based in the EEA or Switzerland, updated data processing terms have already been included in online terms for all Google Analytics and Attribution accounts and for Tag Manager and Optimize accounts created on or after March 12, 2018.
  • For clients based outside of the EEA or Switzerland, data processing terms can be reviewed and accepted in the UIs of each account.
  • Once you accept the new data processing terms, they'll supplement your current contract or Terms of Service and will take effect on May 25, 2018
  • If you contract through a Sales Partner for any 360 products within the Google Analytics Suite, you should seek advice from the parties with whom you contract.
  • If you are located in Germany, the Hamburg Data Protection Authority has been informed of these new data processing terms.
Step 2: Provide your legal entity and contact details for notifications we may need to send under the GDPR (e.g. subprocessor appointment):
  • For Analytics, Optimize, Tag Manager and Attribution, you can provide the contact details within Suite Home ( "Organization Settings" >"Data Processing Amendment - Details"). Learn more.
  • For Data Studio, the contact collection mechanism exists in Data Studio only (not in Suite Home) and is available at User Settings > Account and Privacy. Learn more.

MUSD Update: School Closure Thursday April 26

Letterhead

April 23, 2018

To MUSD Parents/Guardians:

The Arizona Educators United movement and the Arizona Education Association announced last week that educators and staff throughout the state voted 78% to enact a statewide walkout beginning Thursday, April 26. Many Marana educators and staff have joined this movement in solidarity to demand clear, sustainable solutions to Arizona's education crisis.

Based on information we have today, a majority of our school based educators and staff plan to participate in the statewide walkout this Thursday, April 26. While the last thing we want to do is close our schools, we cannot appropriately supervise students and ensure student safety; therefore, all 18 Marana schools will be CLOSED Thursday, April 26. At this time, we do not know how long schools will be closed. If a change at the state or local level indicates that we are able to re-open our schools, we will inform you immediately.

Schools will be open and follow their regular school schedule on Tuesday, April 24 and Wednesday, April 25.

Below you will find some immediate things to know. Please refer to the FAQs, attached to this letter, for more detailed information. FAQs are also available on the District Website at www.maranausd.org and will continue to be updated.

  • All schools in the District will be closed Thursday, April 26, 2018. This impacts preschool through high school.
  • Updates regarding the status of our schools will be posted on the District and on all school Websites. Parents will also receive updates via email, phone call, and social media. Please make sure that your email and telephone number are up to date at your child's school.
  • Because we recognize that many students are dependent on our food services, breakfast and lunch meals will be served at various school locations as well as through our Marana Cares Mobile service. We will provide specific information by Wednesday, April 25 regarding which locations and hours food will be available.
  • All before and after school programming, student services, student and club activities, and after school extra-curricular activities, including LEAP will be canceled on all campuses.
  • Varsity athletics will continue as scheduled if appropriately staffed. Please look for additional information from your principal. All other elementary and high school athletic practices and competitions will be cancelled.
  • Out of state and multi-day field trips will continue as scheduled as long as chaperone(s) are available for the trip. Please look for additional information from your principal regarding your particular trip.
  • Graduation ceremonies will be held as scheduled. If schools remain closed into next week, more specific information related to timely completion of senior requirements will be communicated in a future update.
  • Based on information we have at this time, for each day that school is closed, it will be made up at the end of the current school calendar. Information regarding the school calendar will be communicated in a future update.

Thank you for your continued support of our staff and schools while these statewide actions are under way.

Sincerely,

Doug Wilson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Principal Message

Hello Falcon Families.

I know this is a stressful time for many parents in our district. Please know that the site and district leaders are committed to doing everything we can to avoid closing MMS next week due to the RedforEd purposed walk out. We also want to continue to support our teachers. As a principal, I know that teachers are the people who make connections with your kids, teach them content and life lessons, and provide them a consistent, loving place to go every day. Leadership will continue to work with our staff and teachers as we move through this challenge.  We will keep you all updated each step of the way.

My very best.

Ms. Dickson

PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention Support

At MMS, we have high expectation for student behavior!

Every day we tell students that we expect them to show RESPECT, take RESPONSIBILITY for their words and actions, and to have PRIDE in all they do and say.

When students meet our expectations, we strive to recognize them. Sometimes that means we give them a Falcon Ticket to let them know we appreciate their behavior.  Students can then place their Falcon Ticket in a prize box for a chance to win one of four great prizes.  This month's prizes include: a $25 Amazon gift card, a $25 Bass Pro Shops gift card, a 32 oz. Hydroflask, and a $25 American Eagle Outfitters gift card.

Marana Middle School will provide an experience that fosters life-long academic and personal growth in a world-class education environment. Faculty and staff will collaborate with families, students and the community to develop strong, caring and productive leaders.

April 20 Superintendent Letter to MUSD Parents

Letterhead

April 20, 2018

To MUSD Parents/Guardians:

As you are aware, over the last several days, educators and staff across the state were voting on whether or not to participate in a walkout. Last night, the Arizona Educators United movement and the Arizona Education Association announced that educators and staff across our state voted to enact a walkout beginning Thursday, April 26. No information was given on length of that walk out. The two groups stated that 57,000 ballots were returned of which 78% voted for the walkout.

At this time, it is unconfirmed how this will affect schools in our District. We recognize that this raises many questions and issues for you. Please know that District Administration and school leadership are meeting with teacher representatives for Arizona Educators United and working hard to develop specifics for how to best handle the situation for students, parents and staff members.

I want to assure you that all schools will continue to be open and follow their regular school schedule Monday, April 23; Tuesday, April 24; and Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Marana Unified School District is making every effort to avoid closing district schools on Thursday, April 26. However, if we have too few staff members to appropriately supervise students and ensure their safety and well-being, we will be forced to close schools.

As soon as we have additional information we will communicate with you. We ask that you consider an alternative plan for your student(s) in the event that our schools close. We also ask that you please make sure that your phone numbers and email addresses are up to date at your child's school.

Attached to this letter, you will find additional information in the form of FAQs. This information is also posted on the District Website at www.maranausd.org. These FAQs will continue to be updated and we will continue to keep you informed.

It is our hope that this situation will be resolved at the state level so that teaching and learning continues through the remainder of the school year as planned. I appreciate your understanding and patience as we gather critical information and solidify our plans.

Sincerely,

Doug Wilson, Ed.D.
Superintendent
