September 21 Letter from MUSD

MUSD Letterhead

September 21, 2020

Dear MUSD Families,

We wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with an update from last week's Governing Board meeting. Before we do that, we again want to say thank you for all of your partnership throughout these challenging times. We know that working through a worldwide pandemic has presented many difficulties. We remain incredibly proud of the work that our administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, and students are doing.

The Governing Board has provided direction with October 19th as our target date for a return to in-person, classroom instruction. While we are hopeful for a return to in-person, classroom instruction five days a week, we also continue to monitor the health metrics and plan for contingencies. Details outlining our return are available on our district webpage. There are four critical components to our Return to School plan that we wanted to share with you:

  • Mitigation Plan
    • The District's Mitigation Plan includes several components focused on layered mitigation strategies in coordination with guidance from the Pima County Health Department. Layered mitigation strategies means providing several layers of safeguards to reduce the spread and transmission of disease. This week our principals will be working to add site specific needs to the Plan (e.g. student drop off and pick up, recess, pass periods). It is important to note that elements of this plan will continue to evolve as further guidance is received.
    • Please note the change to the face covering policy that will go into effect immediately. This change complies with the Pima County Health Department, updated CDC guidance, and Executive Order 2020-51.
  • Learning Models
    • The three Learning Models being implemented include Classroom Learning (in-person learning), Flexible (Remote) Learning, and Distance Learning. While our planning focus remains on providing for five days per week with specific mitigation protocols in place, we will continue to monitor the health metrics as presented by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Pima County Health Department. In addition, we want to be sure to provide a high quality, equitable learning opportunity for students and families who are more comfortable remaining in remote learning. Specifics of these Learning Models are available on the District's web page.
  • Small Group Transition Activities
    • As we move closer to October 19th, we are working with principals to begin identifying ways we can bring specific students back onto campuses beginning the week of September 28th in small groups for transition type activities. We see this as a beneficial way to begin transitioning students back to our campuses. More information will come directly from your child's school regarding the timelines for these activities.
  • Commitment Surveys
    • Schools will be communicating with you later this week to get a final commitment regarding your desired Learning Model. This information will be critical as we look to finalize our transition planning.

In closing, we want to thank you again for your partnership. Information related to our Return to School plans is available on our web page. Additionally, please feel free to reach out to your child's school with any questions that you may have. We look forward to supporting you as we work together to return to school safely and effectively.

Thank you,

MUSD Administration
