End of Quarter and Donor's Choose Project

Hello Parents!

I just wanted to send an update about the end of our first quarter as well as share a fundraising project I have started for my classes. This past week our class ended the 1st quarter strong with amazing in-class performances of the projects they had been working on for the past few weeks. They also received a live recording demonstration from a special guest speaker. I'm looking forward to see how much more they will grow as musicians when we return from fall break.

I'm including a link to a Donors Choose Project that I have started. This project is about half way to being fully funded and I am asking that all my parents share this link and project with anyone who would be willing to support your students in their guitar class. This project would fund an electronic drum set as well as headphones and pocket amps that students in my guitar class can use for their future projects and performances. Dear Families,

We made it through the 1st quarter! We are so pleased with all of the students progress and effort so far this year. As we stated at the beginning of the year, if your student is missing a major summative or multiple assignments they will receive an Incomplete for the quarter until I get this work from them. Please remind them to complete any assignments they have not yet turned in. You can access their grades through parent vue to check on this. If they are missing any, they can submit it when we come back from break. Also, please remember that their grades are cumulative, thus 2nd quarter will carry on from this quarter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Have a wonderful fall break!

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

We had an amazing Homecoming week and are excited to complete our first quarter as we look forward to Fall Break.

On Friday night, we honored our newest inductee into the Mountain View Hall of Fame. Our 2019 Hall of Fame inductee is Mrs. Pamela Simon. Pam worked in the Marana Unified School District beginning in 1972 and spent her final year in teaching at Mountain View High School. She was a beloved teacher and inspiration to many. Following her retirement she joined Gabrielle Giffords in her campaign and remained with Gabby as she entered the House of Representatives. Pam survived the shooting on January 8, 2011, and continues to work to stop gun violence. Pam is a true testament to what we aspire our Hall of Fame to represent.

We would like to thank our culinary department and Chef Angello and Chef King for their incredible meal and presentation for the Hall of Fame. The pride and professionalism demonstrated by our students at this event was incredible. Great job!

We also opened our Lion's Den, finally! The gym floor is beautiful. But what stole the show at the Homecoming assembly was the new flag. In the media we hear negative stories about teenagers – yet on Friday, as the flag began to unfurl, the student section became louder and louder and when the flag was fully flown, the students began to chant USA! USA! It was an amazing moment that gave all of us chills.

Again, this week is the last week before break. We will be running a Summit schedule on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week to allow students time to complete missing assignments, get extra tutoring or complete a missing quiz or test. Also, please check on ParentVue and see how your child is doing at this point in the semester.

Things to Know

From the MVHS Front Office,

Teen Maze – information for parents!

On Tuesday, October 29^th, all students in world history classes will be participating in the Teen Maze program. Teen Maze is a drug and alcohol awareness prevention program sponsored by the Marana Prevention Alliance. Students will begin in a staged area as they enter the library. At that point they will be given a passport with will take them to three different scenario/consequence tables in the library. Students will be in small groups, meeting with an adult community member representing their respective agency function – for example – the emergency room, a police officer, a treatment program, seeing a judge or probation officer. We have offered this program the last two years and it was both well-done and well-received by students. If you don't want your student to participate, please contact their work history teacher and an alternate setting will be provided.

Parents and Students,

There will be some new requirements for parking permits and off-campus passes for next year, please see below:

Parking Permits:

To be eligible for a parking permit for the 2019-2020 school year: 1) Meet all parking privilege expectations; 2) Have no more than 10 tardies in your first scheduled class of the day during the 4th quarter.
Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 parking permit due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year.
Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the during the first quarter, will have their parking permit revoked.

Off-Campus Passes:

To be eligible for an off-campus pass for the 2019-2020 school year: 1) Meet all off-campus pass expectations; 2) Have no more than 10 tardies in periods 2-6 during the 4th quarter.
Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 off-campus pass due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year.
Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the first quarter, will have their off-campus pass revoked for three-weeks.

All students should have their student ID with them at all times. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

Parents/Guardians,

As Counselors and College and Career Advisors at Mountain View High School, we understand the expense of attending college (2 and 4 year), trade and specialty schools. One of the best ways to receive aid for these schools, is through the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA provides student with access to grants (money that they don't have to pay back), work-study, and low interest loans. According to the National College Access Network, "90% of high school students who complete the FAFSA proceed directly to college, versus only 55% of students who don't complete the FAFSA." Even if you believe you don't have a financial need that requires FAFSA completion, many scholarships require the student to have a completed FAFSA to qualify and for fund allocation.

In an effort to increase FAFSA completion and inform students about the importance of completion, students will have time during summit to request their FSA ID (students will need to know their Social Security number) which is needed to complete the FAFSA. In addition, the Counseling Department and College and Career Center will be teaching FAFSA lessons (what it is and importance of paying attention to detail when applying) to our seniors through their English class this Tuesday.

We would encourage our students and their guardians to attempt to complete their application as soon as possible or over the fall break. If you have questions, or are unable to complete this application on your own, the College and Career Center will provide a FAFSA completion night on October 23^rd, at 6pm in the CCC (Note: This is a change of location). Parents and students need to bring their FSA ID's and 2018 tax return information.

Winter Sports
The winter sports season is fast approaching. The first day of tryouts/practice is November 4th. Now is the time to get registered. Sports offered in the winter season are: boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer and boys and girls wrestling.

National Honor Society

As part of MUSD's partnership with Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse for Paint Pima Purple month Mountain View's National Honor Society is collecting supplies to donate for their Stuff the Bus event on October 18th.

NHS is collecting supplies until October 11th, please see the attached wanted items list. There will be a collection box in classroom B325 and in the front office.
