Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View family,

This morning we opened up the Mountain View College, Career and Life Skills Center. The feeling we had watching our students enter the new building and see the classrooms and other facilities was priceless. Our hope for the CCLSC is to meet the needs of every Mountain View student and family. From our exceptional students to our Career and Technical Education students to our College program, we want to provide the supports needed to help our students achieve their post-high school goals. With the new building open, we encourage all of our students to eat lunch either in the learning hallway or the patio space.

We are also looking at ways to support our families with the morning drop-off at Mountain View. We do understand that the front lot is extremely busy and you can end up sitting in the front lot for a few minutes. We are opening the service drive on the west edge of campus. This is for one-way traffic heading from Linda Vista south along the driving range and exiting into the Arthur Pack parking lot. We ask that parents that use this route drop off behind the New Gym and continue toward Thornydale. The construction project on Thornydale will be ongoing and will also impede egress from our lot regardless of which route you take. The latest we have heard is this construction project, completed by Pima County Department of Transportation, will be completed in January. That is obviously subject to change.

The first week of school was fantastic at Mountain View. We were very excited to see our students as they returned from break, eager to learn, and get right back into their routines. Our students seem very comfortable with their Chromebooks now and are confident in their digital educational opportunities. With all of the changes we have seen in the last few years regarding learning and instruction one thing remains – "Education is learning more about who you are and how you contribute to making the world a better place." – David Guerin

Things to Know

From the MVHS Front Office,

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students - please enter campus through the Main Gate at the service drive. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444. If a "request to excuse" message is not received, the attendance clerks will attempt to contact the parent/guardian so they may properly record the student's absence(s). If no response is received from the parent/guardian the absence(s) will be recorded as unexcused.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents/Guardians and Students,

MVHS counselors and the College and Career Center, will be meeting with all of our senior students during the week of August 20^th through their English classes. We will be discussing their post-high school plans, graduation status, and sending them home with a senior letter and senior to-do list. A copy of both items will be mailed home as well.

We encourage all MVHS students to get to know their counselor as soon as possible. The more we know about them and their future plans or any concerns they may have, the better we can help. If your student would like to make an appointment with their counselor, please have them see Ms. Sims in counseling.

CCC (College and Career Center) Announcements

Senior Advisement begins August 20^th. Students will have a chance to meet with counselors on a one to one basis/in a small group and be able to meet with CCC.

Seniors come in for help with college applications and any other help or questions! The new building is ready for visitors!

English 1: English Class Week 1

Hi! We are one week into the school year, and I thought I would quickly touch base with parents. The first part of the week was dedicated to housekeeping issues, such as classroom expectations and objectives, but we have started our first reading assignment, "The Most Dangerous Game". As homework this weekend, students should finish reading the last few pages of the short story, and be prepared to discuss the plot on Monday.

Next week, they will be introduced to vocabulary lessons, and will complete a grammar diagnostic. Both subjects will be covered weekly for the remainder of the school year, and will be assigned as practice outside of regularly scheduled class time.

I am already impressed with the level of engagement and enthusiasm I'm seeing in this year's students! It looks to be a great year! Although we covered classroom expectations, I would ask that students remember to follow the rules regarding cellphones during instructional time. They learn best when they are fully present. I appreciate your help in this. Thank you so much.

Open House Invite and Student Drop-off Update

Dear Mountain View Families,

Thank you for your continued support this first week of school. We are committed to making sure that this is our best school year yet. We would like to invite you to our 2018 Open House on August 15, from 5:30-8:00 pm. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet our school staff, explore club options, and follow your child's schedule throughout the evening. We will start our evening in the Main Auditorium and will have food and beverages for sale. Please see attached flyer for more information.

Additionally, as we reflect on the first few days we wanted to announce several changes to our student drop-off routines in the morning. Effective immediately the service drive on the far West side of campus will be open during our morning drop-off time. Parents can drop their student off near the gym and continue South on the service drive through the Arthur Pack parking lot and back out onto Thornydale. This will allow students to be dropped off closer to the J/K building without stopping the flow of traffic in the morning. In order to maintain a safe campus please do not use the Student Parking Lot for student drop-off/pick-up. We are so glad to have a full campus of students.

Welcome Letter from MUSD Superintendent

Dear MUSD Parents/Guardians:

On behalf of the Governing Board and Senior Leadership, it is my privilege to welcome you and your child(ren) to the 2018-2019 school year. We are confident that this will be a GREAT year! As members of Senior Leadership and I visited schools today, we observed wonderful things occurring. Greetings and hugs. Friends reconnecting. New relationships developing. Routines underway. New classrooms explored. Students excited and learning already underway. I encourage you to ask your child about their first day of school during dinnertime tonight.

In Marana schools, our educators and staff are committed to innovative, inspirational, and transformational learning. Our rigorous curriculum is based on standards that provide a consistent framework to give students the tools they need to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens. We are confident when every student graduates and leaves our District that they will be prepared with the skills, knowledge, and values necessary for success in an ever-changing society.

As we begin the new year, we are pleased to have modern new furniture in most classrooms as well as access to mobile devices. New furniture, customized to individual student needs, provide teachers and students the opportunity to interact and collaborate as part of their learning environment. By incorporating 21st century technology and configurable furniture into the classroom, our District deepens the learning experience through higher levels of engagement and empowerment.

Our educators and administrators work with parents and students to ensure that each child has opportunities to excel in all areas. We also encourage parents to take an active role in in their child's learning.
