Good evening Mountain View family,

As we enter the last full week of school before finals, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the many successes of our students this semester. Time and time again, our student body demonstrates how focused they are on their academics and extracurricular activities. We are so proud, and truly lucky, to have the chance to work with such great students.

Additionally, our staff makes many of the wonderful things we do at Mountain View possible. It has certainly been a full semester. Our new grading policy and tiered interventions have shown incredible success and the work of our entire staff have contributed to these successes.

We are proud to announce that beginning in fall 2020, Mountain View High School will start offering the AP Capstone Diploma™ program — a rigorous and innovative Advanced Placement program that allows students to develop key skills for college success, such as research, collaboration, and communication. The program consists of two courses — AP® Seminar and AP Research — taken in sequence. Students who score a 3 or higher in both courses and on four additional AP Exams earn the AP Capstone Diploma™, signifying outstanding academic achievement and attainment of college-level academic and research skills. This is a highly coveted program and we are one of a handful of schools in Arizona that are now recognized as an AP Capstone school.

A note from our Site Based Council. We have tabled the conversation regarding the new cell phone policy that would have started in January. We have a subcommittee that will evaluate cell phone policies from other schools throughout the country. In the spring we will reconvene the SBC and dive deeper into possible cell phone policies for Mountain View.

The end of the semester does bring its stressors, particularly for our students as they finalize projects and prepare themselves for their finals. Please take some time this week to look in ParentVue for updates on your student's grades and ensure their grades are in order

Have a great week!

Things to Know

From the MVHS Front Office,

Cafeteria News

Hello to all my students and their families. It has been such an enjoyable year so far. It has been my pleasure getting to meet and feed your children. There are just a few reminders that I would like for you parents to be aware of and please discuss this with your student(s):
1. Please set up a reminder for yourselves to alert you that your student's account is getting low and that it needs to be replenished. We love feeding our students but we need your help in doing so. So please, if you are able, take a moment to set up that alert, it will help everyone. We also have applications for Free and Reduced Meals, if you need to fill that out, you can find that on our web page.
2. Our students are allowed to have UP TO 4 fruits and veggies. I know that sometimes our students can be in a rush to get their meals and then go eat with their friends. We love feeding our students, however if we stick to the rule of UP TO 4 fruits/veggies, then we can ensure that all our students are able to get a healthy meal.
3. Also, when our students hear the growl after breakfast and lunch, we close down because we want our students to make to their classroom. So please, try to make it to us before that growl so that we can feed you.
If you have any questions or concerns and you wish to talk with me, Elissa Brown, Café Supervisor, please give me a call at 520-579-4425

Open Enrollment Now Open

This is a great school year, and we are excited as we look ahead to next school year. Please assist us in spreading the word to interested families about Open Enrollment. All schools in the Marana Unified School District are open to all students, regardless of where they live.

Open Enrollment applications for the 2020-2021 school year are due on December 15; however since that date is on a Sunday, applications will be accepted through Monday, December 16. The application can be completed online at https://bit.ly/2NkrH5j.

Please know that if your student is already attending our school through open enrollment, you do not have to reapply for next school year.

We are confident we have a very special and educationally enriching experience to offer students, and we hope you will share this news. Visit www.maranausd.org/openenroll for information about Open Enrollment.

Parents and Students,

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate will be the only gate open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents/Guardians,

As we quickly approach the end of the semester, we want to make sure that students are thinking about their post-high school plans. It might seem soon, but only a couple weeks after we return from winter break, students will be picking their courses for the 2020-2021 school year!

In an effort to help post-high school and course planning, counselors have met with our freshmen and sophomore students to talk about graduation requirements, In-State "Sweet 16" college entrance requirements, and their progress towards graduation.

We will be meeting one-on-one with our Junior students in January, to make sure that they have a plan for after high school, know their next steps to that plan, continue to pick classes that support that plan, and know their progress towards graduation.

We encourage you to talk to your student(s) about their post-high school plan and their graduation progress. If they have any questions or aren't sure what they want to do, please encourage them to make an appointment with their counselor or the College and Career Center.

If you have any questions or concerns in regards to your student(s) plan or graduation progress, please do not hesitate to contact us at 520.579.4450.

Please see our attached December Newsletter.

PSAT/NMSQT Scores

PSAT/NMSQT scores have been released online  Below are the next steps for students to follow:

  • Log in to or create a College Board account online at collegeboard.org to view your full score report.
  • Get free, personalized SAT practice. The PSAT/NMSQT is great preparation for the SAT®. Your score unlocks free, personalized practice through Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy®. Visit satpractice.org, create an account, and link your College Board and Khan Academy accounts for a plan based on your test results.
  • Receive AP course recommendations. Your score report identifies AP® courses that are the best match for you. AP can give you an edge in the admission process and earn you college credit while in high school, which saves time and money in college.
  • Explore Careers. Connect with Roadmap to Careers under the Popular Tools tab in your score report. Answer questions about what you like to do to see careers that interest you, what degrees you'll need, and what high school courses to take. Watch video interviews with people in professions related to your interests.
  • 11th Graders: Register for the SAT. Take the next step toward college by registering. We will be holding the SAT here at Mountain View High School on May 2nd . You must register online at collegeboard.org
  • Once MVHS receives the paper score reports, we will send them out with the student's test book. The students can also use this to study and prepare for the next PSAT or SAT.

If you have any questions, please see Ms. Kati in the Counseling Office
