Happy Sunday! We have a short week coming at us with Thursday and Friday off. Please double check your scores in Biology ASAP. Things showing as missing should be in for any grade more than 50% by this Wednesday Feb 20. The 3 assignments that need attention are the DNA test ( scores at 27 or lower are allowed a retake if a student chooses to do it. Maximum retake score is 70% value- 28/40). These can be completed before school, lunches or after school on Monday or Tuesday. The create a person project is past due, but any turned in by Wed 2/20 will be scored. The graph analysis of sport injuries is part of a district assessment practice- the link was given to students on their classroom stream Monday Feb 4. It is important for students to use given class time wisely in order to stay up to date and not have so many missing or late work issues. When absent for extended time, students miss much and may need to stay after to get help and complete work missing. Thank you in advance for your support.

Happy February. With progress reports posting this afternoon, it is a good time to send out an English class update. Following a research project on Ancient Greece, students have started reading Odyssey. For the next several weeks, they will be tracking major themes in the story. Ultimately, they will be assigned an essay comparing Odysseus to modern day heroes. Now is the time to remind students that every in-class activity counts and instructional time devoted to writing their essays should be used wisely. With that in mind, I have also updated my classroom behavior expectations to reiterate the importance of paying attention during instructions, as well as remaining on task until assignments are complete. This includes minimal cell phone use, socializing and video games. Please speak with your student about appropriate use of class time. Thank you for your continued support, and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time. You can also keep updated on what we're doing in class via Google Classroom. Carolyn Marietta English 1-2, 3-4

A Community of Empowered, Innovative and Engaged Citizens | | | Principal's Message Good evening Mountain View families, On Friday we had to say goodbye to our family dog, Scout. That was a painful event and one that truly impacted our entire family. Watching my children and our family process this event was extremely hard. This morning, as we were heading to school and work, we again talked about Scout and shared our stories. It is in the stories that we carry our fondest memories. Each day at Mountain View our students also encounter challenges and each of these help shape their own stories. When our Mountain Lions complete their four years of high school I hope they have tremendous stories that they can use to help carry them through the rest of their lives. This year I have often referenced grit and the tenacity of our students to thrive in the storm. For our family that time was this weekend. For our students that time is now and we hope to provide an education and experience that they will forever remember and grow from in their lives. Last week we had a guest speaker in Mr. Long's class who has joined the Peace Corps. A former Mountain Lion, she is heading to Tanzania to serve for the next 2 ½ years. She shared with the class that the inspiration for her joining the Peace Corps came from her experiences in Mr. Long's World History class. We are proud of Hayla Stewart and thank you for being a great steward of Mountain View. This week our winter sports head into the state tournament. Best of luck to all of you and represent Mountain View well. Our Academic Decathlon team finished 2nd this past weekend. That is a tremendous accomplishment. Great job. Our FBLA students had a fantastic weekend and brought home a lot of hardware. Congratulations Lions. Friday we kicked off our book study. The book, Grading From the Inside Out by Tom Schimmer, details methods for evaluating the grading process and ensuring equity and accuracy in grading. As I mentioned a few weeks back, if you are interested in doing a book study with the administrative team please let me know. The book is available on Amazon and we are really excited that Mr. Schimmer will be at Mountain View this coming August. Thank you to all of our staff, students, families and community for all you do each and every day for Mountain View. Todd Garelick Principal Mountain View High School (520) 579-4427 | | Things to Know Attention Families of Juniors BreakDown Tucson Performance On February 13, we are hosting a special Junior assembly from BreakDown Tucson. BreakDown Tucson is a group of local teens who bring a powerful, dynamic message to their peers. They do this through relevant drama scenes, contemporary and hip-hop dance, and state of the art sound, lighting and visual media. BreakDown Tucson educates by promoting personal health and by proposing ways to prevent health problems through honest dramatizations about drug use, alcohol use, teen pregnancy, date-rape, sexually transmitted infections, depression, suicide and more. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend this engaging performance. If you would like to learn more about BreakDown Tucson, please follow the enclosed link. Attendance at this assembly is completely voluntary. Please take some time to talk with your student about this presentation. Students who do not wish to attend will remain in a classroom or will have a quiet study time in the library. If at any time during the presentation, a student feels uncomfortable with the presentation or the topic, the student may leave the presentation and go to the library for study time or to the counseling office to meet with one of our counselors. The performance begins at 11:15a.m, and ends in time for lunch at 12:31p.m. If you have questions or concerns regarding this presentation, or if you prefer that your student not attend this event, please contact Associate Principal Robin Meece R.C.Meece@maranausd.org, Prevention Coordinator Allyson DiPietro A.J.DiPietro@maranausd.org or Prevention Wellness Coach Karina Duarte K.M.Duarte@maranausd.org. https://www.breakdowntucson.com/ From the MVHS Front Office, All students should have their student ID with them at all times. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore. Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is now open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus. With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors. Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area. Parents: Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office. We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office. Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass. Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.
A Note from the Attendance Office
When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.
"STUDENT ABSENCES"
In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444. If a "request to excuse" message is not received, the attendance clerks will attempt to contact the parent/guardian so they may properly record the student's absence(s). If no response is received from the parent/guardian the absence(s) will be recorded as unexcused.
"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"
Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals. | | College, Career, Counseling Parents/Guardians Course request entry into StudentVUE will take place during Summit on February 12th.
