Principal Message
Hello Falcon Parents,

Spring has always been my favorite season. I guess I can attribute growing up on a farm to my seasonal preference since we were likely to have baby goats and maybe even a new baby calf when March rolled around. Even though we have no baby livestock at MMS, Spring is in the air and exciting things are happening.

We have all enjoyed the fabulous musical Seussical Jr. this week, our band and orchestra kids went to perform at state competitions and our 8th grade softball team won the championship! What a great week to wear the Scarlet Red and Royal Blue colors!

Next week will be the end of the 3rd quarter and then we will all have a week to enjoy SPRING as we go on spring break from March 10th -18th. I hope you enjoy this time with your family and friends. I will be planting flowers in my back yard if anyone needs me!

Prevention and Response

You may be aware that various messages posted on social media and via news accounts have encouraged students nationwide to plan walkouts. The Women's March organizers are encouraging "students, teachers and their allies to walk out of schools on March 14 to protest gun violence." Survivors of the Parkland shooting announced a March for Our Lives event planned for March 24. Another walkout is planned for April 20, which will mark the 19th year since the tragedy at Columbine High School.

Anticipating that this movement may come to Marana schools, we want you to know how we will respond.
While we recognize our student's First Amendment rights to express their views on topics and to advocate for an issue they feel passionate about, it is our responsibility as an educational system to ensure that we provide a safe and respectful learning environment.

Marana schools will not participate in any scheduled school walkout. Participation in such events may increase the sense of fear and anxiety among students, and would create additional safety concerns in ensuring sufficient supervision.
However, we also recognize that some students may have strong emotions about the recent school shooting in Florida and want to have their voices heard. Therefore, principals at our middle and high schools are having conversations with their staff and student leaders. In the event school administration learns of students planning to participate in one of these events, school administration will work with student leaders to ensure an alternative opportunity for students to assemble peacefully together, on campus, in a safe place to share their feelings. Students will be encouraged to stay on campus during school hours for safety reasons. Please assist us by speaking to your child and reminding them of the importance of remaining on campus. In accordance with District policy, students who leave campus without prior parental knowledge or permission will receive an unexcused absence.

Athletics

Hello Falcon Athlete Families!

It is almost time to begin 4th Quarter Sports. Friday March 9th was the last day of registration for Boys' Baseball, Girls' Volleyball, and Track. We appreciate your efforts to get your students registered. The official season for 4th Quarter Sports begins Monday, March 26th, the first day after Spring Break. This week we will be holding our Q4 preseason skills clinics. Students who have signed up and turned in a completed physical may participate. We will continue to accept payments at the MMS Bookstore through March 16th and online payments through March 23rd.

Baseball Skills Clinic: March 12, 13, 14th

Track Skills Clinic: March 12, 13, 14th

Volleyball Skills Clinic: March 12, 13th

The clinics are after school from 4 pm to 5:30 pm. Activity buses are available to bring students home. The skills clinics are a preseason opportunity to meet the coaches and warm up for the sport. They are optional and are not a part of the tryout process, however participation is recommended. Students will not be evaluated during the clinics. It is just a chance to prepare for the season. If you have questions about athletics, please contact Sue Miller at s.z.miller@maranausd.org or at 520-682-4724. We are looking forward to an amazing 4th Quarter of Falcon Athletics.

Counseling Corner

Remember, we have counselors to assist students with their social / emotional needs. If you notice that your child seems stressed, angry, or sad, please reach out to our counselors so that we can offer support.

PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention Support

We have a new PBIS prize center for students who earn Falcon Tickets for being recognized for positive behavior.

Students choose which prize they would like to submit their Falcon Ticket for a chance to win.  Last week we awarded the  $40 Under Armor gift card and the Hydro Flask.  This week we will draw for the $40 Old Navy gift card and the Cosmic Bowling Tickets.

Good luck Falcons!

Marana Middle School will provide an experience that fosters life-long academic and personal growth in a world-class education environment. Faculty and staff will collaborate with families, students and the community to develop strong, caring and productive leaders.
