Principal Message

Hello Falcon Families.

I hope you are having a wonderful Good Friday.  We have had a great week at MMS.  The kids are meeting our behavior expectations, they are working hard at their studies, and having gotten 4th quarter off to a great start!

We have many fun field trips right around the corner, some fine arts performances coming up, and spring sports are getting in full swing with hundreds of students participating.  It's a wonderful time of year!

I wish you and your family a Happy Easter and hope you all have a fabulous weekend.

AIMS and AzMerit Testing:

Next week, we will begin our state testing starting with the AIMS Science test on Tuesday for all 8th graders.  We then move right into the AzMerit tests on Wednesday and Thursday.  We have decided to structure testing a bit different this year.  8th graders who are the only grade that takes AIMS Science, will be taking the test in their 1st period class.  For all of the AzMerit tests, students will take the test with their Language Arts or Math teacher depending on the test being administered. On testing days, we will be following a modified block schedule so students have plenty of time to take the test. Any student who needs additional time beyond the school day, may stay after school and take the activity bus home if they would like.  That schedule is attached for each testing day.

One of the things we tell our students, is to always do their very best in everything they do.  That includes, the day-to-day classroom work, performing in the fine arts, working hard on the athletic fields, and also, taking assessments.

We hope you will encourage your child to take their time and do their best on the test.  They have worked hard with their studies all year, and it is now time to demonstrate that their hard work has paid off!

Principal Message

Principal's Message:

Good Morning Falcon Families!  Here we are…starting the 4th quarter of the 2017-2018 school year! It is cliché but so true, time sprints by.  This is especially true when there is so much to accomplish.  The 4th quarter of the school year is always one filled with so many emotions. Students and teachers are anxious about high-stakes tests, there are many wonderful field trips planned which students excitedly look forward to, and of course, there is the anticipation and nervousness for 8th grade students as they prepare to spread their wings and leave the Nest.

Each day of this quarter will hold many possibilities, challenges and joys! We look forward to this final nine weeks of school and all it holds for our students.  We are all committed to Finishing Strong!

AIMS and AzMerit Testing:

Next week, we will begin our state testing starting with the AIMS Science test on Tuesday.  We then move right into the AzMerit tests on Wednesday and Thursday.  One of the things we tell our students, is to always do their very best in everything they do.  That includes, the day-to-day classroom work, performing in the fine arts, working hard on the athletic fields, and also, taking assessments.

Athletics

Hi Falcon Athlete Families!

Game/Meet schedules will be finalized and distributed after teams are in place. If you have questions about athletics, please contact Sue Miller at s.z.miller@maranausd.org or at 520-682-4724. We are looking forward to another great quarter of Falcon athletics! Go Falcons!

Reading Enrichment 8 S2: Reading Enrichment

Parents,

Just a reminder to you and students:  As we begin the final quarter of Reading Enrichment, students will once again be required to read one chapter book during the quarter.  They have been asked to bring this book with them on the Monday following break.  They are also expected to bring it to class each day.  As with last quarter, students will be required to complete daily and final assignments in conjunction with this book.

Thank you for your help,

Mr. Weinstein

National School Walkouts

Good Morning Falcon Parents,

I am sure you have heard the national news about the various student walk-outs that are occurring around the country today in support of the ENOUGH: National School Walkout movement.

Here at MMS, we are not organizing or endorsing any student walkouts.  However, if any students choose to participate in the movement by leaving their class at 10:00, we do have a plan in place.  Students will be directed to our plaza area where administration and counselors will be supervising.  Students will be escorted back to their class at 10:17.

We will be asking students to sign a pledge card with the heading, "You've Walked Out, Now Please Walk Up."  The idea is to encourage students to "walk up" to a classmate who may be sitting alone at lunch or appear to feel isolated. We will share this information with all students; not just those who walked out of class.

Our goal is to continually work at improving our school climate and we will use the events that occur today to further our work in this endeavor.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Principal Message
Hello Falcon Parents,

Spring has always been my favorite season. I guess I can attribute growing up on a farm to my seasonal preference since we were likely to have baby goats and maybe even a new baby calf when March rolled around. Even though we have no baby livestock at MMS, Spring is in the air and exciting things are happening.

We have all enjoyed the fabulous musical Seussical Jr. this week, our band and orchestra kids went to perform at state competitions and our 8th grade softball team won the championship! What a great week to wear the Scarlet Red and Royal Blue colors!

Next week will be the end of the 3rd quarter and then we will all have a week to enjoy SPRING as we go on spring break from March 10th -18th. I hope you enjoy this time with your family and friends. I will be planting flowers in my back yard if anyone needs me!

Prevention and Response

You may be aware that various messages posted on social media and via news accounts have encouraged students nationwide to plan walkouts. The Women's March organizers are encouraging "students, teachers and their allies to walk out of schools on March 14 to protest gun violence." Survivors of the Parkland shooting announced a March for Our Lives event planned for March 24. Another walkout is planned for April 20, which will mark the 19th year since the tragedy at Columbine High School.

Anticipating that this movement may come to Marana schools, we want you to know how we will respond.
While we recognize our student's First Amendment rights to express their views on topics and to advocate for an issue they feel passionate about, it is our responsibility as an educational system to ensure that we provide a safe and respectful learning environment.

Marana schools will not participate in any scheduled school walkout. Participation in such events may increase the sense of fear and anxiety among students, and would create additional safety concerns in ensuring sufficient supervision.
However, we also recognize that some students may have strong emotions about the recent school shooting in Florida and want to have their voices heard. Therefore, principals at our middle and high schools are having conversations with their staff and student leaders. In the event school administration learns of students planning to participate in one of these events, school administration will work with student leaders to ensure an alternative opportunity for students to assemble peacefully together, on campus, in a safe place to share their feelings. Students will be encouraged to stay on campus during school hours for safety reasons. Please assist us by speaking to your child and reminding them of the importance of remaining on campus. In accordance with District policy, students who leave campus without prior parental knowledge or permission will receive an unexcused absence.

Athletics

Hello Falcon Athlete Families!

It is almost time to begin 4th Quarter Sports. Friday March 9th was the last day of registration for Boys' Baseball, Girls' Volleyball, and Track. We appreciate your efforts to get your students registered. The official season for 4th Quarter Sports begins Monday, March 26th, the first day after Spring Break. This week we will be holding our Q4 preseason skills clinics. Students who have signed up and turned in a completed physical may participate. We will continue to accept payments at the MMS Bookstore through March 16th and online payments through March 23rd.

Baseball Skills Clinic: March 12, 13, 14th

Track Skills Clinic: March 12, 13, 14th

Volleyball Skills Clinic: March 12, 13th

The clinics are after school from 4 pm to 5:30 pm. Activity buses are available to bring students home. The skills clinics are a preseason opportunity to meet the coaches and warm up for the sport. They are optional and are not a part of the tryout process, however participation is recommended. Students will not be evaluated during the clinics. It is just a chance to prepare for the season. If you have questions about athletics, please contact Sue Miller at s.z.miller@maranausd.org or at 520-682-4724. We are looking forward to an amazing 4th Quarter of Falcon Athletics.

Counseling Corner

Remember, we have counselors to assist students with their social / emotional needs. If you notice that your child seems stressed, angry, or sad, please reach out to our counselors so that we can offer support.

PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention Support

We have a new PBIS prize center for students who earn Falcon Tickets for being recognized for positive behavior.

Students choose which prize they would like to submit their Falcon Ticket for a chance to win.  Last week we awarded the  $40 Under Armor gift card and the Hydro Flask.  This week we will draw for the $40 Old Navy gift card and the Cosmic Bowling Tickets.

Good luck Falcons!

Marana Middle School will provide an experience that fosters life-long academic and personal growth in a world-class education environment. Faculty and staff will collaborate with families, students and the community to develop strong, caring and productive leaders.

Notice of Public Meetings to consider closing Thornydale Elementary

Public Meetings to consider
closing Thornydale Elementary

To ensure the highest quality education, school sustainability, and fiscal responsibility of the resources entrusted to the District by taxpayers, the Governing Board of the Marana Unified School District is considering the closure of Thornydale Elementary School, effective June 2019.

Over the past several years, the Marana district has closely monitored student enrollment numbers at Thornydale Elementary School. A school built in 1974, with a historical high enrollment has steadily declined the past eight years to an enrollment of approximately 300. As state budgets have also steadily declined and costs associated with building maintenance and utilities have continued to increase, school enrollment is vitally important to the sustainability of a school.

The Governing Board of the Marana Unified School District will conduct a Public Meeting on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. The meeting will be held at 6:00pm at Thornydale Elementary School Cafeteria located at 7651 N. Old Father Drive, Tucson, AZ 85741. In accordance with A.R.S. §15-341(A)(32), District parents and guardians are being informed of this meeting in which the school district Governing Board shall hear reasons for or against the closure of Thornydale Elementary School.

Please know that the Governing Board takes this discussion very seriously and encourages parents, students, staff, and community to share their thoughts. If unable to attend the Governing Board Public Meeting, information can be shared with the Governing Board utilizing the District's "Let's Talk" 24/7 communication tool at https://www.maranausd.org/letstalk, or by providing a written statement to the school principal, or email at MUSD6@maranausd.org.

On Thursday, April 12, 2018, the school district Governing Board may vote on this matter during their regularly scheduled Public Meeting at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at the Marana Municipal Complex, located at 11555 W. Civic Drive in Marana, Arizona.

If the Governing Board does vote to close Thornydale Elementary, attendance boundaries will be redrawn to include Quail Run Elementary School and Butterfield Elementary School.

  • Transportation for Thornydale students will be provided to either of these schools.
  • Parents may also choose to open enroll to another Marana school in accordance with policy.
  • It is anticipated that all Thornydale teachers, staff, and administrators will continue to have a position within the District due to attrition at other school sites as well as the opening of the K-8 school in Dove Mountain.

Please join us for one or more performance.

On Thursday, our band will be in a competition at the University of Arizona. This is our first festival so Mr. Schroeder and his students are anxious for this day to arrive.
