MVHS Important Letter from Principal

Mountain View High School     April 29, 2019 Dear Mountain View High School Parents and Guardians, We consider the safety and well-being of our students to be a top priority. To this end, I am sending this letter to be sure that you have accurate information regarding what is currently occuring. A social media post has been brought to the attention of school Administration which states a shooting threat to Mountain View High School and to not go to school and stay home. Following our standard protocol, school administration contacted the Pima County Sheriff's Department, who immediately began an investigation in collaboration with school administration. The Pima County Sheriff's Department has determined that the post is untraceable. In addition, it is unknown if this post is related to our Mountain View High School. It appears that the post came from a third party App which then posted to various social media platforms. There is no way to determine where or how or who posted this since there is no identifiable information. There are no indications that this post is related to our school and there are no indications of a threat against our school. However, we will continue to have additional law enforcement presence on campus today as a precautionary measure. Please know that we are continuing to follow our regular school schedule today. In the event you or your child is aware of any information related to this, please contact the front office. Thank you for your cooperation during this time. Please know that our priority is the safety and security of our students and staff and that we will continue to follow all direction of the Pima County Sheriff's Department. A Community of Empowered, Innovative and Engaged Citizens Mountain Lion Monday Principal's Message  Good evening Mountain Lion family, Last week was a special one at Mountain View. We had the opportunity to recognize our Top 10 for the Class of 2019. We also had our Scholar of the Year Dinner. This was a fantastic night and we are thankful to Daniel Dales for his commitment to our school and sponsoring this event. We also have a number of students we want to recognize for their hard work and for representing our school in such an amazing fashion. The Mountain View Orchestra, along with their teacher Ms. Vargas, had an incredible year. We had one student represent Mountain View at All-State, Ivan Romero, and are very proud of his accomplishment. We also had three students attend the State of the Town address for the Town of Marana. Thank you to Hunter Holt, Aiden Acuna and Austin Anderson. As you may have read earlier today, we had a lock-down drill at Mountain View. As a part of our continual efforts to provide a safe and secure learning environment at our school, we performed a practice lock-down drill this morning. This was a planned drill and not a response to any threat.   We conduct safety drills to practice our Emergency Response procedures, ensuring students and staff are aware of processes including where to go, what to do, and how as a school we would respond in the event of a real emergency.   Thank you for your support of Mountain View and have a great week.         Todd Garelick Principal Mountain View High School (520) 579-4427 Things to Know From the MVHS Front Office, Parents and Students, There will be some new requirements for parking permits and off-campus passes for next year, please see below: Parking Permits: To be eligible for a parking permit for the 2019-2020 school year:  1) Meet all parking privilege expectations; 2) Have no more than 10 tardies in your first scheduled class of the day during the 4th quarter. Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 parking permit due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year. Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the during the first quarter, will have their parking permit revoked. Off-Campus Passes: To be eligible for an off-campus pass for the 2019-2020 school year:  1) Meet all off-campus pass expectations; 2) Have no more than 10 tardies in periods 2-6 during the 4th quarter. Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 off-campus pass due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year. Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the during the first quarter, will have their off-campus pass revoked for three-weeks.   Elevate Announcement: Attention: Families of Students Entering Mountain View High School in August 2019  Mountain View High School is offering a free summer transition camp, Elevate, for freshmen who are entering Mountain View in August, 2019.   Camp will be held on Monday, July 29 and Tuesday, July 30, from 8:15 to 11:30 am. The purpose of Elevate is to welcome new students to our campus and to give them an opportunity to have fun, meet new friends and teachers, and learn what it's like to be a Mountain Lion. On Monday, April 22, an email with the brochure and a link to the registration form will be sent to the families of all newly registered freshmen.  If you do not receive the email, and your student will be a freshman and is registered for next school year, please contact Lois Sims in the counseling office.  Registration will open on Tuesday,  April 23.   All students should have their student ID with them at all times. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore. Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is now open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus. With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.  Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area. Parents: Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office. We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office. Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass. Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.  A Note from the Attendance Office When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded. "STUDENT ABSENCES" In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444. If a "request to excuse" message is not received, the attendance clerks will attempt to contact the parent/guardian so they may properly record the student's absence(s). If no response is received from the parent/guardian the absence(s) will be recorded as unexcused. "STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS" Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals. Lock-down DRILL

Dear Mountain View Parents/Guardians:

As a part of our continual efforts to provide a safe and secure learning environment at our school, I want to inform you that Mountain View High School performed a practice lock-down drill this morning. This was a planned drill and not a response to any threat.  

We conduct safety drills to practice our Emergency Response procedures, ensuring students and staff are aware of processes including where to go, what to do, and how as a school we would respond in the event of a real emergency.

These drills also assist us in identifying any gaps or issues in protocols so that they may be addressed and improved upon. 

Please take a moment and talk to your student about today's drill and the importance of our practice. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to give me a call.
