A Community of Empowered, Innovative and Engaged Citizens Mountain Lion Monday Principal's Message Good evening Mountain View family, We want to start with a recognition this week that makes all of us very proud. Ms. Jill Hurt was recognized on Saturday night at the University of Arizona football game as one of nine finalists for the Circle K/U of A Teacher of the Year Award. Ms. Hurt is a tremendous teacher that gives so much of herself every single day and we wish her the very best as she moves forward in the teacher of the year program. This is Homecoming week. On Friday, the football team will face Cienega. We also welcome our newest member to the Mountain View Hall of Fame. Dr. Thomas Desmaris will be inducted into this prestigious club and we are very proud of him and his accomplishments. He truly embodies what it means to be a Lion! We also have the many other Homecoming activities this week, including the Pep Assembly on Friday and Dance after the game. As we move into the seventh week of school it is important that our students stay on top of their assignments and work hard as we head toward the end of this quarter. Please remember to look at ParentVue for more information regarding your child's grade. This is the time of year that our teachers focus heavily on one of our Continuous Improvement Goals – Demonstration of Learning – and this may take many different iterations. When we discuss student engagement and demonstration of learning we want our teachers to be informed on what their students know. We may have been accustomed to paper and pencil tests. However, there has been a shift in thinking and we understand that students can demonstrate their knowledge in many ways. Our goals is that all students learn each day and can demonstrate that learning on an assessment. Have a great week and Happy Homecoming. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore. Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM Students - please enter campus through the Main Gate at the service drive.  Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus. With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.  Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area. Parents: Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office. We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office. Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass. Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.    Chromebook Insurance There is still time to purchase Chromebook Insurance. If interested, please contact Mrs. Ketchum in the Bookstore to purchase insurance. The cost is $30.00. Chromebook Insurance covers accidental damage to the device for the initial occurrence.  Insurance does not, however, cover the replacement of a device charger.  Insurance is not required, but it can provide peace of mind.    A Note from the Attendance Office When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded. "STUDENT ABSENCES" In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444. If a "request to excuse" message is not received, the attendance clerks will attempt to contact the parent/guardian so they may properly record the student's absence(s). If no response is received from the parent/guardian the absence(s) will be recorded as unexcused. "STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS" Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals. That probably is hard for all of us to believe as it feels like we just returned from our summer vacations yesterday. The heat also keeps us reminded of what summer is like and makes each of us consider whether summer will ever end. Yet, here we are, deep into the first quarter, with our first grading period nearing a close. As mentioned the last few weeks, we highly encourage you to visit ParentVue and have conversations with your children regarding grades and work. Our teachers have met with their students and have reviewed their current grades but we feel that the conversation you have with your child will be far more powerful. I also want you to be able to celebrate the accomplishments of your children when you peruse their grades.   I have been receiving many different quotes related to education and am excited to post those that are shared with me. This week I was sent this quote: "Don't let yesterday take up too much of today." – Will Rogers. This is a wonderful message and echoes the sentiments we have also been discussing the last few weeks in our communications. We want our students to take risks. We want our students to face and overcome adversity. We want our students to fail and to get back up again. We want our students to demonstrate grit.  Sometimes we need to eliminate the distractions, or noise, from the past and make ourselves better the next time we face obstacles. We cannot let yesterday take too much of our today and we need to encourage our students to look ahead to their tomorrow.   We hope you have a great week.
