Typhoon nears battered Philippines

Typhoon Lupit hovered about 720 miles east of Cagayan, the Philippines northernmost province, packing sustained winds of 109 mph and was expected to make landfall Thursday, forecasters said.

African Union backs Guinea arms embargo

The AU said Sunday it was supporting an embargo imposed by the Economic Community of West African States, which has accused military ruler Capt. Moussa Camara of mass human rights violations during a Sept. 28 demonstration in which observers said troops opened fire on unarmed protesters, the Voice of America reported.

Spy trial of Iran Baha'i prisoners delayed

Diane Ala'i, the Baha'i International Community representative to the United Nations in Switzerland, said Iranian court officials did not offer a new date for the trial, which had been set for Sunday but was called off without explanation, CNN reported.
